To navigate this, you need robust data governance frameworks, clear data classification (knowing exactly what sensitive data you have and where it lives), and tools that can perform “point deletes” effectively, even in massive datasets.
I’ve found that technologies like Delta Lake are super helpful here, as they provide ACID transactions and can manage data retention and deletion policies.
You also need to consider pseudonymization – transforming personal data so it can’t be linked to an individual without additional information – and strict access policies around those links.
Remember, it’s not just about your data lake; you have to ensure data is deleted from all upstream and downstream sources too. It’s a complex puzzle, but getting it right means maintaining customer trust and avoiding those hefty fines!
